lesson in perseverance

My lesson in perseverance came late last evening. I found myself in the presence of a unsung hero. Imagine a single female around 22 years of age who has spent most of the day with her beloved grandfather. Then imagine that the grandfather is in a hospital. Then imagine that the grandfather is on life support and not expected to make it through the night. It is April 10th and the young single 22-year-old female realizes that her grandfather will not know April 11th. Then imagine that this young woman goes to dinner and a movie and during the movie, she receives a text message that her beloved grandfather has died. Then finally imagine that she keeps all this to herself until after the movie, unraveling the story in the car on the way home.

I almost had to pull to the side of the road.

There is bravery everywhere.

We see it everywhere
in the faces of children
who
have been
the victims of angry parents
in the voices of wives
who
have become punching bags
in the quiet cries of mothers
who
rescue their fruit from crack cocaine
in the expressions of women
who
have to bury their loved ones too soon
in the eyes of  young girls
who
live in Sierra Leone
in the faces of streeted Haitian men
who
cannot provide for their families,
nor keep them safe
in the urgent voices of rescue workers
who
cry out for survivors five miles under ground
it is everywhere

Courage, bravery, perseverence.
