is it hot here, or is this just the equator?

while living on my literary equator, i met a most intriguing man today. While pumping gas into his street sweeper, he was singing Stone In Love With You by the Stylistics (1995) and his pitch was perfect. Engaging and entertaining, he is a poet and a little romantic, with quite a plethora of love poems…the last one was down right nasty. Sure made my day. We chatted for a while. I walked away thinking he went to extremes to get a phone number. Meanwhile, I got nothing but a name. Oh, well.  He made my day.

I dedicate this blog entry to Charles!

Now i need to use this forum to rant just a bit. What’s with the haters like Maureen Dowd hating on our first last, Michelle Obama. Sometimes I just cannot believe how arrogant and full of themselves our European brothers and sisters can be. nobody blinks at Chelsea Clinton spending a staggering $3.5 million (with an “M”) dollars for a wedding the week before First Lady Michelle takes her daughter on vacation in Spain. The paparazzi were all over it.  i imagine the newsroom at CNN tilted at a 45° angle behind the scandalous choices by Mrs. Obama (and her security detail. I understand that actually it is the Secret Service that decides where she stays, not Michelle).

Nee-ner, Nee-ner, to the haters “>” But Ms. Andrea Tantaros is leading the charge against our First Lady. She likens Michelle to a “modern day Marie Antoinette!!!”

Here’s what Holly Bailey wrote for UpShot:

Yet the bigger public furor concerns the cost and appearance of the trip. In a scathing editorial published Thursday, New York Daily News writer Andrea Tantaros trashed Michelle Obama as a “modern day Marie Antoinette” for taking such a glitzy vacation while most of the country is struggling to make ends meet. The Obama entourage is staying at the luxury Hotel Villa Padierna, a Ritz-Carlton property often described as one of the world’s top 10 hotels. Rates range between $500 and $2,500 a night. It’s not clear that the Obama delegation picked this hotel specifically, or if the Secret Service — which often gets final say over where a protectee stays — made the accommodations call.

when i read she stayed in a Ritz-Carlton-type hotel known as the Villa Padierna and blocked off a wing of rooms around her i thought, oh, right… she supposed to make herself comfortable at the Motel 6 . I can’t believe it. And so far, not one person has had anything to say about how unfair the attack on Mrs. O has been. Not Leno, not Letterman, not Jimmy, nobody.

All I know is Chelsea Clinton and Mark What’s-His-Name better stay together or I want my tax money back that lined the pockets of the people who paid for their ceremony. $3.5 Million indeed!

a-n-y-w-a-y

back to the point of this blog…i entered “The First Days of Winter” in the Arvon International Poetry Competition 2010 today while at Panera Bread. Think it’s a winner. Part of the prize package is a trip to London to participate in a reading by the winners, and publication in the Arvon Anthology. Winning means this piece is off the market for a while. I’ll take that in exchange for a trip to London. I laughed out loud when that came up in the eligibility criteria. London. England.

Don’t know why for sure but lately, I’ve been wanting to see Europe, namely France and England and Ireland. it seems weird to me to think these thoughts and even more weird that I find it weird. why not go to Europe, Africa, Asia? I spoke with a woman yesterday who had just returned from China and she treated it as if it were no big deal. No big deal unless you’re talking to someone who didn’t know how to dream until about 2 or 3 years ago, and even then her dream life was stunted because of crippling forces surrounding her. People who saw the world as if it were a tiny little marble set in a black background, instead of the huge place that it is. a play ground for a gypsy spirit like me, anyway.

more later ya’ll
